Creative Careers Week 2022
As part of Creative Careers Week 2022, we hear from our youngest crew member, Beth McDonald, about how she got involved in working at our museum.
I started my museum journey when I got the opportunity through the Kickstart Scheme to work at HMS Unicorn as a Museum Assistant in October 2021. I had previously worked in the care sector butwanted to find a career that I was more passionate about.
At HMS Unicorn, with the support of the staff on board, I gained skills and confidence in a variety of museum tasks and as a result of my hard work and enthusiasm for a career in museums I was offered a new post at the end of the 6 month placement.
I now work as a Visitor Services Assistant where I welcome visitors on to the ship, answer their enquiries and lead guided tours where I showcase the interesting and inspiring history of HMS Unicorn.
I've also had many opportunities to further develop my skills by assisting with our learning and engagement programme. My favourite activity that I helped with was our Halloween Tour where I got to dress up as a spooky ship's surgeon and terrify the audience with creepy tales about life on board a ship.
One of the things I am most proud of is the increase in positive online reviews for HMS Unicorn from our visitors. Many of these mention me by name and show how through working here I am able to inspire people with Unicorn's history and make a positive impact on their visitor experience.
I love the fact that no day in my job is ever the same. I have the opportunity to work with members of the public spanning all ages and take pride in my high standard of customer service.
The staff at HMS Unicorn have been great in supporting me throughout my journey and enhancing my skills in all areas of work - they are all fantastic and I honestly don't think you would find a nicer group of people to work with.
