HMS Unicorn packed for Doors Open Day
HMS Unicorn took part in the Doors Open Days on Saturday 11th September 2021. Doors Open Days is Scotland’s largest free festival that celebrates heritage and the built environment, which offers free access to over a thousand venues across the country each September.
The aim of event is to ensure that Scotland’s spaces and stories, new and old, are made accessible to people living and visiting the country. This festival is coordinated nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust and is part of European Heritage Days alongside Archaeology Scotland’s Scottish Archaeology Month. Both events are supported by Historic Environment Scotland.
Socially-distanced Vvsitors were welcomed on board in the hundreds to explore Unicorn's historic decks, and relished the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a Georgian sailing frigate. Visitors were treated to tours from volunteer guides Bob and Reece, sharing their knowledge about the ship's history and the more gruesome aspects of life at sea in the 1820s!
The Unicorn Preservation Society was delighted to offer the chance for the Dundee community to see inside the ship at no cost, and hope for plain sailing for Doors Open Day 2022.
