HMS Unicorn has a large collection of objects connected with her century-long service as a training ship for the RNR & RNVR in Dundee.

From documents and letters to uniforms and photographs, this collection tells the story of Unicorn’s life in Dundee and the proud history of Britain’s naval reserve force.

  • HMS Unicorn Visitors’ Book

    Purchased from William Kidd & Sons of Dundee, this black leather visitors’ book was used on board HMS Unicorn during her years as a training ship for the RNR & RNVR.

    It contains the signatures of several important visitors to the ship throughout the 20th century, including King George VI and the Queen Mother when they visited during the Second World War.

    Thousands of men signed up on HMS Unicorn to serve on land and sea in both the First and Second World War. The ship’s war memorial commemorates the men of the RNR & RNVR who never returned.

    Beginning in 1918, an annual service of remembrance has taken place on board HMS Unicorn in front of the war memorial. This tradition still carries on to this day.
